In a momentous celebration of excellence, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian Governors Forum have jointly rewarded the Super Falcons with a combined package of ₦4.95 billion, national honours, and new homes following their thrilling victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The triumphant 24-woman squad and 11 technical staff received a whopping ₦4.602 billion from President Tinubu, including a $100,000 cash reward (₦1,560/USD) for each player and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew. This gesture was complemented by an additional ₦350 million from the Governors Forum during a grand reception at the Presidential Villa on Monday.
Each recipient will also receive a three-bedroom apartment in the government’s Renewed Hope Estate, and all team members were conferred with the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
“With this, the Nigerian spirit is unyielding and will never die. God bless you,” the President said while celebrating the team’s resilience and patriotism.
The Falcons cemented their status as continental giants after an electrifying 3–2 comeback win over hosts Morocco, clinching their 10th WAFCON title. They had an unbeaten run in the tournament, topping their group without conceding a single goal and delivering a 5–0 blow to Zambia in the quarterfinals.
Their semi-final clash saw Michelle Alozie net a crucial winner against South Africa, while Esther Okoronkwo’s heroics sealed the final.
The Falcons dominated the individual accolades too:
- Rasheedat Ajibade – Player of the Tournament
- Chiamaka Nnadozie – Best Goalkeeper
- Justine Madugu – Best Coach
This historic achievement adds to Nigeria’s proud legacy of WAFCON titles in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
