YouTube announced plans to enable content creators to append notes to their videos, offering additional context. This feature, set to be launched soon, is currently being tested by a select group of users and creators. These notes aim to provide “relevant, timely, and easy-to-understand context” for video content.
Similar to the ‘Community Notes’ on X (formerly Twitter), which allow select contributors to tag posts with context like “misleading” or “out of context,” YouTube’s new Context Notes feature seeks to enhance the verifiability and trustworthiness of its platform through crowdsourced information.
Examples provided by YouTube include clarifying when a song is a parody, indicating the release of a new version of a product being reviewed, or notifying viewers when outdated footage is presented as current events.
Initially, the notes feature will be accessible on mobile devices for users in the U.S. and in English. During this testing phase, third-party evaluators will assess the usefulness of the notes to help refine the system before a wider rollout is considered.
