Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has officially launched a transformative cash transfer programme aimed at boosting girls’ education and empowering local communities through sustainable development initiatives.
The rollout ceremony, held in Gusau, marks a key milestone in the state’s partnership with the ACReSAL (Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes) and AGILE (Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment) projects.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, the programme will benefit 8,225 secondary school girls drawn from the most vulnerable households across all 14 local government areas of the state. Each beneficiary will receive ₦60,000 per academic year — ₦40,000 for the first term and ₦10,000 each for the second and third terms.
A total of ₦322 million has been approved for the first batch, with arrangements already underway for the second phase of disbursements.
Speaking at the event, Governor Lawal emphasized the programme’s alignment with his administration’s broader vision for education, social protection, and inclusive development.
“We are committed to tackling and overcoming all barriers—economic, infrastructural, or social—that prevent our daughters from accessing and completing their education,” he said. “When you educate a girl, you educate a village. These girls grow into empowered women who uplift families and transform communities.”
In addition to the girls’ education support, Governor Lawal also flagged off the Community Revolving Fund disbursement under the ACReSAL project. 500 beneficiaries from Gusau, Bungudu, and Kaura Namoda will receive funds to support grassroots environmental and economic initiatives.
The initiative, he said, is designed to address climate challenges, combat land degradation, promote sustainable agriculture, and improve local livelihoods. He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely, noting that the revolving nature of the fund will ensure its impact spreads across more communities over time.
“This is more than just financial aid; it’s about building resilience, promoting accountability, and encouraging self-sustaining growth at the grassroots level,” he said.
Governor Lawal praised the collaborative efforts of the Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources, Education, Science and Technology, and other technical partners for their roles in implementing the initiatives.
He reassured the people of Zamfara of his administration’s unwavering dedication to policies that deliver real, grassroots impact.
