In a bid to alleviate economic hardships during Ramadan, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed essential food and non-food items to over 10,000 orphans, widows, and persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Borno State.
Flagging off the distribution in Maiduguri over the weekend, NEDC Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, emphasized that the initiative was part of the Commission’s broader effort to support vulnerable communities amid rising costs of living.
“Our gesture of distributing these materials is aimed at easing the economic burden on orphans, widows, and PWDs during the holy month of Ramadan,” Alkali stated.

The relief package included 7,000 bags and cartons of rice and vegetable oil, as well as 5,000 cartons and pieces of spaghetti and shaddah materials.
Beyond the Ramadan support, Alkali revealed that 7,197 flood victims in Maiduguri had also received food and non-food items to help them recover from recent floods. He further noted that the distribution exercise would extend to five other states in the Northeast—Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe—replicating similar efforts from the previous year.
To ensure effective distribution, the Commission has partnered with legislators, traditional rulers, and security agencies, enabling them to reach local communities with much-needed palliatives during the fasting period.
