The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has praised the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation for its visionary leadership in advancing democratic values through a recent two-day interactive programme focused on government-citizen engagement.
Held on July 29–30, 2025, at Arewa House in Kaduna, the event, themed “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Development,” served as a platform for open dialogue between the government and citizens. It provided an opportunity to evaluate the performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration two years into office.
Dr. Tunji Bamidele, Director of Strategic Communication at DWI, described the initiative as a “beacon of hope” amid widespread distrust and misinformation in the democratic space. He commended the Foundation’s dedication to transparency, civic inclusion, and policy accountability.
“In a time where citizens often feel disconnected from governance, this programme reaffirms the power of dialogue and public participation,” Bamidele said. “By providing a platform to review electoral promises and hear directly from government representatives, the Foundation is helping to bridge critical trust gaps.”
The programme builds on the success of the Foundation’s 2022 presidential candidates’ town hall, which helped shape public expectations and leadership accountability during the 2023 election cycle. According to DWI, the 2025 event represents a vital follow-up, encouraging citizens to inquire about progress made and demanding tangible outcomes.
Beyond political promises, the initiative also tackled misinformation surrounding government policies, with discussions aimed at clarifying actions taken and challenges faced by the administration. The interactive format allowed for real-time feedback and collaborative problem-solving.
Dr. Bamidele highlighted the broader implications for national development, noting that inclusive conversations lead to better-informed policies and more responsive governance. “The emphasis on civic responsibility and informed engagement will help citizens play an active role in shaping the country’s future,” he added.
DWI called for continued collaboration between civil society, government, and citizens to build trust, deepen democratic practices, and co-create solutions for Nigeria’s challenges.
