The Federal Government is currently constructing 6,112 housing units across Northern Nigeria as part of its Renewed Hope Housing Programme, aimed at boosting job creation, economic growth, and social stability.
Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, made this known during an interactive session in Kaduna, as captured in a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation on Tuesday.
The housing projects span several states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, Benue, Katsina, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, and Nasarawa. Dangiwa disclosed that the Renewed Hope City in Karsana, FCT, alone accounts for 3,112 units, while 1,500 housing units are being constructed in Kano. Additionally, 250-unit estates have been completed in each of six states: Benue, Katsina, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, and Nasarawa.
“All project sites are being developed with essential infrastructure including integrated road networks, water supply systems, solar-powered streetlights, and other basic amenities to ensure livability,” the minister said.
The programme has so far generated over 152,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a financial boost to artisans and workers. Many of them now earn up to ₦150,000 monthly, contributing to household income and stimulating local economies.
Dangiwa also revealed plans under the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme to deliver 100 affordable homes in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, using innovative financing options like mortgage and rent-to-own schemes. The ministry is also exploring the development of building materials manufacturing hubs to reduce construction costs and improve accessibility.
In response to humanitarian needs, the government is constructing 252 homes across seven northern states—Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Niger, Benue, and Sokoto—to resettle internally displaced persons. The pilot site in Tudun Biri, Kaduna, is already underway to support families affected by the December 2023 military airstrike.
The Ministry has also completed over 150 urban renewal and slum upgrade projects, with 100 more in progress. Notable areas include Tudun Wada (Sokoto), Yankaba (Kano), and Tunga (Niger).
Through its Special Projects Unit, the Ministry has delivered 71 classrooms, 15 health centres, 58 boreholes, and 63 rural roads, backed by an investment exceeding ₦61 billion, creating an additional 10,700 jobs.
Dangiwa described the initiative as a powerful expression of the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding communities, empowering citizens, and restoring dignity across Nigeria.
