IHS Nigeria, a leader in shared communications infrastructure, has partnered with the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to advance clean energy adoption and improve environmental health outcomes across Abuja.
The collaboration, formalised at IHS’s Lagos office, will deliver community-based projects designed to reduce fossil fuel dependence, cut carbon emissions, and expand access to sustainable energy. With over 16,000 sites nationwide, IHS is extending its investment in solar and hybrid power systems already backed by over US$750 million in the past decade into initiatives that link cleaner energy with stronger public health and long term economic growth.
Speaking on the partnership, IHS Nigeria CEO Mohamad Darwish said: “We are acutely aware of our carbon footprint. This alliance enables us to broaden our sustainability agenda beyond telecom infrastructure to embrace community health and climate resilience.”
Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of HSES, highlighted the economic and health dividends of a cleaner environment: “By promoting clean cooking methods, deploying off-grid solar solutions, and reducing air pollution, this collaboration not only safeguards well-being but also sets the FCT on a path to healthier and more productive communities.”
Analysts suggest that the alliance could yield wide-reaching benefits from reducing energy costs and enhancing corporate social responsibility to reinforcing Nigeria’s climate commitments under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
As the partnership rolls out, attention will be on how this private public alliance can translate sustainability efforts into healthier citizens and a more resilient economy.
