The Federal Ministry of Education has officially commenced the disbursement of funds under the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF), a flagship initiative of the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at enhancing staff welfare, institutional productivity, and innovation across Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
Launched in August 2025 following extensive stakeholder consultations, the program has now entered full implementation, with over 9,000 staff members receiving support in its first year. This represents 28% of the 33,000 verified applicants drawn from 219 federal and state tertiary institutions nationwide.
Beneficiaries include both academic and non-academic personnel, reflecting a 30:70 ratio, demonstrating the Ministry’s commitment to inclusive support for all staff across universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Commenting on the milestone, Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for decisive leadership and a focus on staff welfare, noting that disbursements commenced within just four months of the program’s rollout. He expressed gratitude for the sustained investment in Nigeria’s education sector.
The TISSF forms a central pillar of the Nigerian Education Sector Renewal Initiative, designed to strengthen staff morale and effectiveness while positioning tertiary institutions as centres of excellence, innovation, and knowledge creation. The fund provides concessionary zero-interest loans and welfare packages of up to ₦10 million per staff member, addressing challenges in housing, healthcare, education, mobility, and small business support. Dr. Alausa emphasized that the program goes beyond financial aid, aiming to restore dignity, reward dedication, and rebuild the backbone of Nigeria’s knowledge economy.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, quarterly financial reporting, and continuous engagement with all participating institutions, ensuring proper utilization of funds and enabling the program to reach even more beneficiaries nationwide.
