A civil society organisation focused on poverty alleviation and disaster management in Niger Delta oil-producing communities has urged greater transparency in the management of funds accruing to the Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) in Akwa Ibom.
The Network Advancement Programme for Poverty & Disaster Risk Reduction (NAPPDRR) expressed support for the EMOIMEE management team named after the oil-producing local government areas of Eket, Mbo, Onna, Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, and Esit Ekete but stressed the need for financial accountability to ease rising tensions in the communities.
After reviewing the 2025 Annual General Meeting report, we applaud the achievements of EMOIMEE HCDT, which include ICT centres, solar powered water projects, upgrades to medical facilities, oil palm processing mills, and various training programmes for women, youths, and persons with disabilities,” the statement said.
The CSO condemned attempts by influential individuals and traditional rulers to manipulate the HCDT for personal gain, warning that such actions could undermine progress. It called on stakeholders to continue supporting the leadership of Mkpisong Sir Bassey Dan Abia, Unwana Evans Ekwere, and Engr. Emmanuel Sam, whose commitment to transparency has been exemplary.
