Akinyemi Oluwaseun Omotayo (Asherkine) is famous for his viral "stunt philanthropy" video
Opinion: Viral Philanthropy and the Sustainability Gap
Social media personality Asherkine has responded to growing allegations that a recent philanthropic video circulating online was staged. The video, which showed him surprising a young waitress with gifts and travel experiences, quickly gained traction across social platforms. However, it also triggered intense debate about authenticity and the growing trend of viral generosity.
The controversy escalated after several viewers began questioning the sequence of events in the video. Some users argued that certain details did not align with typical everyday scenarios. Others suggested the interaction looked rehearsed rather than spontaneous.
In response, Asherkine posted a detailed explanation on X. He pushed back against claims that the interaction was fabricated. Instead, he argued that critics were making assumptions about the young woman because of how she looked and where she worked.
He explained that the woman lives and works in Ogun State while having family in Lagos. According to him, the distance between the two locations is normal and should not appear suspicious. He also clarified that the events shown in the video did not occur within a single day.
According to Asherkine, the story developed over a week after their first meeting. He therefore questioned why viewers believed the entire interaction happened within 48 hours. This clarification aimed to challenge what he described as misleading narratives circulating online.
A Personal Story of Hustle
At the same time, he shared parts of his personal journey to support his position. He recalled filming entertainers at events from the age of 17 while studying around the University of Lagos. Later, he moved across Lagos neighborhoods while documenting the work of artists such as Yhemolee, Asake and Ashidapo.
He explained that those early experiences eventually led to opportunities within the Nigerian entertainment industry. That journey, he argued, shaped his understanding of hustle and opportunity. As a result, he believes he understands the realities many young Nigerians face while trying to build a future.
Online Reactions Remain Divided
Despite this explanation, reactions online remained divided. Some users defended his actions and argued that generosity should not attract criticism. Others insisted that the details of the story still raised valid questions about authenticity.
One comment focused on logistics within the restaurant setting. The user questioned why a waitress would leave the shop to deliver food to a rider. Another commenter suggested that most delivery riders typically enter the shop to collect orders themselves.
Other critics raised cultural concerns. They questioned whether a Nigerian parent would immediately allow a daughter travel abroad with someone she just met. Some also pointed out that the possession of a passport by a young waitress seemed unusual to them.
Yet another group of users shifted the conversation in a different direction. Instead of debating authenticity, they questioned the value of the content itself. In their view, highly publicised luxury gestures may not represent the most impactful way to help people.
This perspective opens a broader conversation about the difference between viral generosity and sustainable impact. Social media philanthropy often creates powerful emotional moments that attract millions of views. However, those moments rarely address deeper structural challenges.
The Case for Sustainable Impact

A single act of generosity can certainly change one person’s situation. Nevertheless, it does not automatically create long term solutions for wider communities. That gap highlights where corporate social responsibility and environmental, social and governance strategies become relevant.
Unlike spontaneous acts of charity, CSR initiatives operate through structured programmes. Companies design these programmes to address social challenges at scale. They also measure outcomes over time rather than relying on one moment of attention.
Similarly, ESG frameworks push organisations to integrate social impact into long term strategy. Businesses therefore invest in education, job creation, environmental protection and community development. These initiatives often deliver more consistent benefits to larger groups of people.
Beyond Viral Moments
This does not mean individual philanthropy lacks value. In fact, many meaningful social movements begin with personal acts of kindness. However, the sustainability of impact often increases when institutions build systems around social investment.
The Asherkine debate therefore reveals more than a dispute about authenticity. It also reflects the public’s growing awareness of how impact should be measured. Audiences now ask whether generosity creates lasting change or simply generates viral moments.
In the end, both perspectives highlight an important truth. Social media can inspire generosity and spark important conversations. Yet sustainable development still depends on structured responsibility through CSR and ESG driven initiatives.
