Ghana Wants to Leverage Australia’s Expertise to Boost Mining, Renewable Energy 

Ghana has indicated its intention to pursue deeper cooperation with Australia, particularly in the areas of sustainable mining and renewable energy.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, while receiving the Open Letters of Australia’s High Commissioner-designate to Ghana, Her Excellency Keara Shaw, on Friday, 24 July 2026, acknowledged Australia as one of his country’s valued partners, expressing confidence that HE Shaw’s tenure would further strengthen the longstanding cordial relations between their two countries.

He stressed the need to expand collaboration in sectors of mutual interest.

Sustainable Mining, Renewable Energy

Ablakwa said his country was keen to benefit from Australia’s experience in the mining industry, particularly in implementing sustainable mining reforms aimed at reclaiming degraded forests and restoring polluted water bodies.

He also pointed to renewable energy as another priority area for cooperation, noting Ghana’s commitment to expanding the use of solar energy as part of its energy transition and broader sustainable development agenda.

A History of Longstanding Cooperation

In her response, High Commissioner-designate Shaw said Ghana and Australia have a proud history of friendship and cooperation founded on mutual respect and shared values.

Bilateral relations between the two countries centre around mining and resources, trade, and education, supported by diplomatic missions in both countries.

Ghana is one of the major African hotspots for Australian mining investment. There are dozens of Australian mining, exploration, and support service companies operating in the West African country, primarily targeting gold and lithium.

Both countries also enjoy mutual partnerships in the areas education and agriculture focusing on local skills development, agricultural growth, and training programmes. 

Looking Ahead

Ms Shaw’s response signalled Australia’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding partnership with Ghana and continued support for the West African nation’s development priorities.

She also reiterated Australia’s support for Ghana’s Reparative Justice agenda and pledged to work closely with the government to advance cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Going forward, both countries committed to broadening bilateral cooperation in critical sectors, including sustainable mining, renewable energy, and other development priorities.
