When 127 teachers graduated from a training program in Owerri, Imo State, the number itself appeared straightforward.
But the significance of the program goes beyond 127 certificates.
The teachers and education evaluators had spent three months learning digital skills, STEAM-focused teaching methods and alternative income-generating skills under the Seplat Teachers Empowerment Programme (STEP), a joint initiative of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) and Seplat Energy.
The first Imo cohort is part of a broader effort to strengthen teacher capacity and introduce more modern approaches to learning. The programme had previously been implemented in Edo and Delta States, where more than 2,000 teachers have been trained.
For Imo, however, the more important question is what happens after the graduation ceremony.
If the teachers take the knowledge into their classrooms, share it with colleagues and use it to help students engage differently with science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, the impact could extend far beyond the original 127 beneficiaries.
That is where the real value of corporate investment in education begins to emerge.
Moving beyond traditional classroom teaching
