Stakeholders in the transport sector have renewed calls for improved driver training methods as a strategy to curb road crashes and strengthen economic growth.
The appeal was made at the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI) Annual Train-the-Trainer Workshop, themed “Drivers’ Education: Panacea to Economic Growth and Development.”
In a statement, organisers highlighted that the workshop underscored the critical role of driver education in building safer roads and sustaining development in Lagos and beyond.
Declaring the event open, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, reaffirmed government’s commitment to a safer transport system through structured training and strict adherence to driving standards.
One of the highlights came from Ojo Balogun, founder of Leap Driving Academy, who spoke on “Innovative Driver Training for Enhanced Road Safety.” He emphasised that tailoring instruction to learning styles visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic can drastically improve driver competence, knowledge retention, and safety outcomes.
To demonstrate, Balogun introduced drunk driving simulation goggles, designed to replicate blood alcohol concentration levels between 0.08 and 0.15. Volunteers performed simple coordination tasks first without the goggles, and then while wearing them. The difference was striking—participants struggled with balance, reaction time, and judgement. The interactive activity made the dangers of impaired driving unforgettable for trainers.
He concluded:
“I urge all stakeholders government, training institutions, and private drivers to embrace adaptive and practical training methods. By prioritising driver education, Lagos will not only save lives but also boost productivity and economic growth through safer roads.”
The General Manager of LASDRI, Mrs. Afusat Tiamiyu, was commended for her leadership in enforcing training compliance and raising the standards of driver education across the state.
As Lagos grapples with rapid urbanisation and growing vehicle numbers, experts agree that workshops like this remain vital in shaping a transport system rooted in innovation, safety, and sustainability.
