Ijebu-Ife Community Grammar School, Ogun State, is receiving a major facelift as its old students rally together to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary. The alumni association has embarked on a signature tripartite project that includes installing CCTV cameras, providing solar lighting, and completing the perimeter fencing of the school.
Founded in 1975 through the vision of community leaders, the school has produced distinguished Nigerians, including Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, surgeon Dr. Babalola Adejinle, and Shell Nigeria’s first gas reservoir engineer, Engr. Adeniyi Afolabi.
In a joint statement, alumni president Adeniyi Afolabi and Local Organising Committee chairman Rotimi Omoniyi expressed gratitude to the school, describing their contributions as a way of honouring its legacy. “We are what we are today because some people saw tomorrow. We have a responsibility to ensure that the vision of the founding fathers does not die,” they said.
So far, about ₦50 million has been invested in the anniversary projects, which also include rebuilding the school gates, with plans for digital classrooms and rehabilitation of existing buildings.
The golden jubilee celebration, starting September 4, will feature a courtesy visit to the Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, health talks on cancer and hypertension, free medical tests, a novelty match, and a gala night. The highpoint will be the recognition of the school’s founding fathers, alongside prominent alumni, under the theme “Honouring the Past, Inspiring the Future.”
