The Federal Government has launched the Circular Economy Youth Empowerment Initiative (CEYEI), a nationwide programme designed to combat youth unemployment, accelerate economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability. Implemented by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development in collaboration with SAMU Technology and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), the initiative is part of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
At the heart of CEYEI is the Waste-to-Wealth Project, which will train and empower young Nigerians to convert waste into eco-friendly, marketable products. Participants will benefit from hands-on training, mentorship, access to green technologies, and platforms to showcase innovations locally and globally. A dedicated Waste-to-Wealth online hub has also been launched to serve as a one-stop centre for registration, networking, investment opportunities, and market expansion.
The Minister of Youth Development hailed the programme as a transformative step toward raising a new generation of innovators and entrepreneurs, noting that it goes beyond job creation to foster nation-building through sustainable innovation. Complementary programmes such as the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA), digital literacy training with NITDA, the YO! Health mental wellness hub, and the rollout of the Youth Cred Scheme a loan access programme that paves the way for a Youth Bank and MSME incubator were also highlighted.
The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Sununu, emphasized the urgency of investing in youth-led initiatives amid Nigeria’s humanitarian challenges and the global funding gap for poverty reduction. Meanwhile, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olubunmi Olusanya, described CEYEI as a bold step to harness the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Nigerian youth, while RAN representatives applauded the programme as proof of Nigeria’s commitment to positioning young people as drivers of sustainable change.
With nationwide coverage across 36 states and 774 local government areas, CEYEI is anchored on inclusivity, ensuring equal access for young Nigerians from diverse regions and backgrounds. By promoting reduce, reuse, and recycle practices, the initiative is expected to expand Nigeria’s circular economy, cut emissions, and strengthen youth participation in climate action and sustainable development
