Oando Clean Energy and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) have officially partnered to develop Nigeria’s largest 1.2-gigawatt (GW) solar power project, a milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. This initiative aims to enhance electricity access, reduce carbon emissions, and drive economic growth by boosting local manufacturing and creating jobs.
Transforming Nigeria’s Energy Sector
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on March 19, 2025, outlines a phased rollout, with an initial 600 megawatts (MW) of solar power set for completion by 2026. This groundbreaking project underscores Nigeria’s commitment to renewable energy adoption and sustainable development.
A Game-Changer for Clean Energy
Managing Director/CEO of REA, Abubakar Abba Aliyu, described the project as a game-changer, stating:
“This collaboration is not just about expanding electricity access—it positions Nigeria as a renewable energy leader.”

Oando Clean Energy’s President & CEO, Ademola Ogunbanjo, highlighted the project’s innovation-driven approach, which includes Africa’s first solar module assembly plant with a recycling line. This initiative ensures that old solar panels are repurposed, supporting a circular economy in the renewable energy sector.
“This is Africa’s first solar module assembly plant with a recycling line, ensuring outdated panels are repurposed into raw materials,” Ogunbanjo explained.
Boosting Economic Growth and Sustainability
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s renewable energy roadmap, aiming to reduce fossil fuel dependency, improve energy security, and create thousands of jobs in the solar power sector. By strengthening local solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing, this project will drive long-term economic sustainability and innovation.
Oando Clean Energy is also spearheading clean transportation solutions, partnering with the Lagos State Government to deploy 5,000 electric buses, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and green mobility.
Leading Nigeria’s Just Energy Transition
Group CEO Wale Tinubu emphasized Oando’s vision for a just energy transition, ensuring Nigeria’s move toward renewables is inclusive and economically viable.
The company joins other energy giants like NNPCL, Seplat Energy, Aiteo Group, and TotalEnergies, all of which are investing in renewable solutions, reflecting a major shift in Nigeria’s energy landscape.
A Sustainable Future for Nigeria
With this 1.2GW solar power project, Oando Clean Energy is taking a leadership role in Nigeria’s sustainability revolution, advancing innovation, carbon reduction, and long-term energy security.
