The Isa Kaita College of Education, Dutsinma, in collaboration with the UNICEF Kano Field Office, has launched an ambitious programme to train at least 20,000 youths across Katsina State in artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative is aimed at boosting digital literacy and preparing young people including out-of-school children for the opportunities and challenges of a rapidly evolving technological world.
The programme began with the training of 700 lecturers, teachers, and facilitators who will cascade AI knowledge to learners in schools and communities across the state. To support the rollout, coordinators have been trained and 10 technical teams, earlier equipped in Kano, will oversee activities across different training centres. Each participating teacher is expected to mentor at least 40 learners, who will receive certificates upon completion.
According to facilitators, the training is structured in three stages—Generative AI Foundation, Medium, and Master culminating in globally recognised certifications from Microsoft Corporation in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education.
Speaking at the launch, a technical member of the state’s generative AI team noted that while AI is a powerful global tool, young people must be guided to apply it responsibly to avoid misuse. He described the programme as timely, stressing its potential to transform learning, teaching, and future career paths.
Early participants have already begun to experience the benefits. A Guidance and Counselling Master at Government Girls Secondary School, Tsagero, described the training as transformative, highlighting its impact on lesson planning, classroom management, and student engagement.
By prioritising educators and facilitators, UNICEF and Isa Kaita College are creating a multiplier effect that will equip thousands of Katsina youths with AI skills, positioning them for opportunities in education, employment, and entrepreneurship.
