The Federal Ministry of Youth Development has reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to inclusive growth, clean energy adoption, and women’s economic empowerment with the deployment of solar-powered electric tricycles to women entrepreneurs in Abuja.
The initiative, unveiled during a handover ceremony to members of the Women of Wisdom Multipurpose Cooperative Society, reflects a strategic alignment with national climate goals, youth development priorities, and gender inclusive economic policies. Delivered under the theme Empowering Women, Building Futures, the programme demonstrates how government-led partnerships can translate sustainability commitments into tangible livelihoods at the community level.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Youth Development described the project as part of a broader effort to integrate green technology into everyday economic activities, particularly within the informal and cooperative sectors. He noted that expanding access to clean mobility solutions not only reduces carbon emissions but also enhances income stability for operators affected by rising fuel costs and energy price volatility.
The Electric Tricycle Empowerment Initiative, launched in November 2025, was designed to promote affordable, low-emission transportation while supporting job creation and asset ownership among young Nigerians and women-led enterprises. By incorporating solar panels into the tricycles, the programme further lowers operational expenses, improves climate resilience, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
According to the minister, electric tricycles offer long-term economic and environmental benefits, including lower maintenance costs, reduced air and noise pollution, and improved efficiency for small-scale transport operators. Beneficiaries were encouraged to view the tricycles as productive business assets capable of generating sustainable income rather than short-term assistance.
The President of the Women of Wisdom Cooperative welcomed the initiative, noting that access to clean and productive assets would strengthen members’ livelihoods while positioning them to participate in Nigeria’s growing green economy. She added that the cooperative’s adoption of electric mobility reflects a conscious commitment to combining economic growth with environmental stewardship.
A representative of transport operators at the event emphasised the importance of responsible asset management and accountability, stressing that successful implementation would pave the way for the expansion of similar empowerment programmes across the country.
For small businesses, cooperatives, and development stakeholders, the initiative highlights the role of renewable energy and sustainable transport in driving job creation, reducing operational costs, and advancing climate action while deepening women’s participation in Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon and inclusive economy.
