Applications are now open for the Pierre Castel Prize 2026, a pan-African entrepreneurship initiative designed to identify and support high-potential agribusiness founders building solutions within Africa’s food and agricultural systems.
The programme, now in its 9th edition, targets young entrepreneurs working across agriculture, food processing, AgriTech, logistics, circular economy systems, and climate-smart value chains. Selected participants will receive financial support of up to €35,000, alongside mentorship, business coaching, and access to a continental network of investors and development partners.
The initiative is implemented across seven African countries, with national winners advancing to a continental stage where one entrepreneur is ultimately selected as the Pan-African Laureate.
Why It Matters
Africa’s food systems sit at the centre of one of the continent’s most pressing contradictions.
On one hand, the continent holds vast agricultural potential, abundant arable land, and a rapidly growing youth population eager to engage in productive enterprise. On the other hand, it continues to face persistent food insecurity, weak supply chains, and overdependence on imported food systems and technologies.
This structural imbalance is not only a production challenge but also an innovation gap. Many African agribusinesses struggle to scale because they lack access to patient capital, structured mentorship, and ecosystem-level support needed to compete in increasingly complex global food markets.
The Pierre Castel Prize matters because it directly targets this gap. Rather than focusing solely on short-term funding, the programme invests in entrepreneurs capable of building scalable, climate-resilient, and locally grounded food systems.
By strengthening agribusiness innovation across production, processing, distribution, and value addition, the initiative contributes to broader goals of food sovereignty, job creation, and rural economic transformation.
In essence, it positions agriculture not just as subsistence, but as a structured pathway for industrial growth and economic resilience across Africa.
