The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), Lagos Chapter, is changing the story for female engineers by turning challenges into opportunities for growth, empowerment, and relevance in today’s fast changing world.
At its 2025 Annual General Meeting in Lagos, the immediate past chairman, Dr. Atinuke Owolabi, shared how the chapter has bridged the gap between theory and practice through hands-on training, mentorship, and innovation-driven programmes.
Over the past two years, APWEN Lagos has hosted workshops, hackathons, and digital trainings that helped young engineers gain practical skills in Auto-CAD, manufacturing, solar energy, and cybersecurity. Through initiatives like the SHEnovation Hackathon and the SECAP programme, more than 200 young female engineers were trained, while over 1,500 girls were inspired through STEM based school outreach and mentorship programmes.
Senior engineers were not left behind, as more than 50 professionals were trained in AI tools to help them remain relevant in today’s workplace. The chapter also facilitated job placements with leading firms such as Dangote, Tranos, and Covenant Plus, giving members real opportunities to advance their careers.
“Beyond numbers, we have changed lives,” Owolabi said. “From mentoring girls in Makoko to establishing innovation hubs at UNILAG, APWEN Lagos is ensuring every female engineer young or senior has a chance to learn, grow, and thrive.”
The chapter’s work has strengthened systems, expanded visibility, and inspired confidence in the profession, positioning female engineers not just as problem-solvers but as leaders shaping a sustainable future for communities and the nation.
