The Edo State Government has initiated reconnection to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), five years after it broke the firm’s monopoly through the establishment of Ossiomo Power, a 95MW independent power producer.
Director General of the Edo State Electrification Agency, Saturday Egbadon, confirmed the development on Monday, noting that electricity supply has already been restored to some government buildings and streetlights, with more connections underway.
The move follows the shutdown of Ossiomo Power on September 1, 2025, amid an ownership dispute between the company and its Chinese partners, Jiangsu Communication Clean Energy Technology.
For years, Ossiomo Power had served as a reliable alternative to BEDC, supplying electricity to government facilities, the Edo Government House, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat, private organisations, and critical public infrastructure.
With its closure, the state government has turned back to BEDC to sustain power supply across key assets. Officials said the reconnection process is ongoing, while discussions continue on resolving the Ossiomo ownership crisis.
The situation has raised fresh questions about the sustainability of Nigeria’s independent power projects and the urgent need for policy clarity to safeguard critical infrastructure from corporate disputes.
