In a major step towards reducing poverty and improving livelihoods, the Federal Government of Nigeria has scaled up its National Cash Transfer Programme, targeting 15 million vulnerable citizens nationwide. The initiative aims to provide ₦25,000 in three tranches to each beneficiary, directly boosting household income and economic resilience.
Speaking at a stakeholder sensitisation and awareness meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Mrs. Toyin Balogun—represented by Permanent Secretary Dr. Mofoluwake Ibitoye—highlighted the programme’s role in tackling poverty and economic vulnerability. She noted that Oyo State’s Cash Transfer Unit has made significant strides in reaching targeted households, commending Governor Seyi Makinde for his unwavering commitment to social welfare.
Over the past six months, more than 150,000 households in Oyo State have already benefited from the programme. According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Intervention and Donor Funds, Mrs. Aderonke Adedayo (represented by Mrs. Temitope Fagbola), all disbursements are made directly into verified bank accounts linked to beneficiaries’ National Identification Numbers (NINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), ensuring transparency and accountability.
State Programme Manager, Mr. Akintunde Gbadamosi, confirmed that only individuals listed on the State Social Register with valid NINs are eligible, adding that efforts are underway to provide debit cards for easier access to funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Representatives from the National Orientation Agency, the National Identity Management Commission, and the Department of State Services hailed the initiative as timely and impactful, pledging continued collaboration in public sensitisation, security, and beneficiary verification to ensure the programme reaches those who need it most.
