FG Selects 16,000 Nigerians for Free Digital Skills Training as 72,850 Apply

The Federal Government has selected 16,000 Nigerians for a free digital training program designed to equip participants with skills needed to compete for jobs and opportunities in the global digital economy.

The selection comes after 72,850 Nigerians applied for the program, highlighting the strong demand for digital skills and employment opportunities among Nigerians seeking to improve their competitiveness in an increasingly technology-driven economy.

The program, known as the Digital Training Academy, is part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to expand digital skills development and prepare more Nigerians for opportunities beyond the local labor market.

With technology reshaping how businesses operate and how services are delivered, the ability to work with digital tools is becoming increasingly important across sectors. For Nigeria, building a workforce with relevant digital capabilities could also support the country’s ambitions to increase participation in the global digital economy.

16,000 Selected From More Than 72,000 Applicants

The difference between the number of applicants and the number selected is one of the most significant aspects of the program.

While 16,000 Nigerians will participate in the first cohort, more than 72,000 people expressed interest.

That level of demand points to a wider challenge facing the country: many Nigerians are actively looking for ways to acquire marketable skills that can improve their employment prospects and income opportunities.

For young people entering an increasingly competitive labor market, digital skills can provide access to opportunities that are not necessarily restricted by location.

A person with the right technical or digital skills can potentially work with businesses, organizations and clients outside Nigeria, creating opportunities in areas such as technology, digital marketing, data, design, software development and other digitally enabled services.

However, training programmes must go beyond simply providing certificates. The real value lies in whether participants can apply what they learn and convert those skills into employment, freelance opportunities, entrepreneurship or other forms of sustainable income.

Building Skills for a Global Labour Market

The focus on global job skills is particularly relevant as remote work and digital services continue to create new possibilities for skilled workers.

Nigerian professionals are already participating in international digital markets, providing services to businesses and clients across different countries.

But competing globally requires more than basic digital literacy.

Workers need practical, industry-relevant skills and the ability to demonstrate what they can do. They also need communication, problem-solving, collaboration and other professional skills that employers increasingly consider alongside technical competence.

This makes the quality and relevance of the training important.

If the Digital Training Academy is able to provide participants with practical skills that align with real market demand, the program could help reduce some of the barriers Nigerians face when trying to enter digital careers.

It could also contribute to the development of a larger talent pool for Nigerian businesses looking to adopt technology and compete in international markets.

Digital Skills Are Becoming an Economic Issue

Digital skills are no longer only relevant to people working in the technology sector.

Businesses across agriculture, finance, healthcare, education, retail, media, manufacturing and professional services increasingly rely on digital tools to operate and reach customers.

This means that a digitally capable workforce can have an impact beyond individual employment.

Small businesses, for example, can use digital platforms to market products, communicate with customers, manage operations and access new markets.

Professionals can use digital tools to improve productivity, while businesses can hire skilled workers to support areas such as software development, data management, cybersecurity, content creation and digital communications.

The wider economic benefit therefore depends on how effectively digital skills are connected to actual business and employment opportunities.

The Gap Between Training and Employment

While programmes like this can expand access to training, there is a critical gap that government and other stakeholders must continue to address: what happens after the training?

Completing a digital course does not automatically result in employment.

Participants may still need access to devices, reliable internet, electricity, professional networks, mentorship, work experience and platforms where they can find jobs or clients.

For some Nigerians, the cost of accessing these basic resources can be a bigger barrier than the cost of training itself.

This is why digital-skills programmes should ideally be connected to the wider employment ecosystem.

Participants need opportunities to practise their skills, build portfolios, connect with employers and understand how to navigate the global digital marketplace.

Without these connections, even well-designed training programmes may struggle to produce the level of economic impact expected from them.

72,850 Applications Show the Scale of Demand

The 72,850 applications also provide a useful indication of the appetite for structured opportunities to acquire employable skills.

The demand suggests that many Nigerians are willing to invest time in learning when they see a credible pathway towards better employment and income.

It also raises questions about scale.

If tens of thousands of people applied for one program but only 16,000 could be accommodated, there remains a large pool of Nigerians seeking similar opportunities.

Expanding access to quality digital education, therefore, could become an important part of Nigeria’s workforce-development strategy.

This does not necessarily mean that government must provide every training opportunity directly. Partnerships with technology companies, educational institutions, private-sector employers and training providers could help expand access while ensuring that programmes remain connected to changing industry needs.

Turning Training Into Opportunity

The success of the Digital Training Academy should ultimately be measured beyond the number of people enrolled or certificates issued.

Government should be able to track how many participants complete the program, how many secure employment, how many begin earning from freelance or remote work, and how many use the skills to build or grow businesses.

Other indicators could include income changes, job retention, employer satisfaction and the number of participants who move into higher-skilled roles.

These measurements would help determine whether the program is creating lasting economic value rather than simply delivering training.

For participants, the opportunity is equally significant. The training can provide a foundation, but the responsibility will also be to practise, build portfolios, develop professional networks and continue learning as technology changes.

Digital careers are not static. Skills that are highly valuable today can become less relevant as new technologies emerge.

Nigeria’s Digital Workforce Needs More Than Training

The selection of 16,000 Nigerians is a positive step towards expanding access to digital skills, but it is only one part of the larger workforce challenge.

Nigeria needs an ecosystem where people can learn, access technology, find work and continue developing their skills.

That requires better digital infrastructure, affordable internet access, reliable electricity, stronger links between training providers and employers, and policies that support digital businesses and remote workers.

The country also needs to ensure that digital opportunities are not concentrated only among people in major urban centres.

If digital skills programmes can reach people across different communities and connect training with real economic opportunities, they can contribute to a more inclusive digital economy.

The 72,850 applications demonstrate that the demand is already there.

The bigger test now is whether the 16,000 selected Nigerians will leave the program with skills they can use to secure jobs, earn income and compete effectively in a global economy.
