The Federal Government has directed a high-level committee to roll out urgent measures aimed at reducing food prices nationwide, in a move designed to tackle inflation, strengthen rural livelihoods, and ease poverty.
Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, disclosed that the plan focuses on ensuring the safe passage of farm produce across transport routes. By cutting logistics costs and reducing post-harvest losses, food items are expected to become more affordable for millions of Nigerians.
He explained that the initiative forms part of a broader national strategy for food sovereignty—one that guarantees not just availability, but also affordability, accessibility, and nutrition on a sustainable basis.
As part of the push, government is set to launch a Farmer Soil Health Scheme to boost crop productivity and roll out a revamped cooperative reform programme to mobilise resources and empower smallholder farmers.
“Cooperatives are a proven tool for resource mobilisation and rural economic development. Strengthening them will improve livelihoods and open pathways out of poverty for countless families,” Abdullahi said.
Agriculture experts at the event stressed that beyond lowering prices, the interventions could stimulate job creation, enhance local production, and reduce the country’s dependence on imports.
