In a landmark move to advance sustainable waste management, Nigeria has launched a $2.9 million high-tech plastic recycling facility. Funded by the Government of Japan, the initiative supports Nigeria’s drive toward circular economy practices and environmental sustainability.
Cutting-Edge Plastic Recycling Technology Unveiled
The new Plastic Manufacturing Technology Upgrade, commissioned at Environmental Expressions Ltd. in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), introduces:
- A Laser Filter System
- A Sand Remover System
These innovations will enhance plastic recycling efficiency, remove impurities, and improve polyethylene output quality.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to reducing pollution through:
- Recycling
- Waste reduction
- Material reuse
He described the upgrade as a “monumental achievement”, adding that it addresses critical environmental concerns like:
- Blocked drainage systems
- Urban waste accumulation
- Health risks from improper plastic disposal

Multi-Stakeholder Partnership for Sustainability
The facility is part of the UNIDO-led project titled “Promoting Sustainable Plastic Value Chains Through Circular Practices.” It brings together:
- United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)
- Government of Japan
- Federal Ministry of Environment
Mohammed Malick Fall, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, emphasized the project’s role in integrating circular economy principles into Nigeria’s waste management systems.
Hitoshi Kozaki, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Japan, noted Japan’s commitment to Africa’s green development through:
- The Green Growth with Africa Initiative
- The Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, targeting zero marine plastic pollution by 2050
He described the new systems as game-changers in Nigeria’s recycling sector.
A Decade of Commitment to Plastic Recycling
Habib Ahmed, Managing Director of Environmental Expressions Ltd., expressed deep appreciation for the support received. He highlighted the company’s 10-year dedication to plastic recycling, saying:
“We collect plastic waste nationwide, process it, and supply construction firms, hospitals, and supermarkets.”
According to him, the upgrade will expand production capacity and boost environmental impact.
