Nigeria has entered a strategic partnership with Dutch firm Solarge BV to begin local manufacturing of solar panels, aiming to reduce dependence on imported energy equipment, cut public sector diesel use, and create thousands of jobs.
The initiative driven by a collaboration between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (InfraCorp), and Solarge will see the establishment of a modern solar panel production facility through a special purpose vehicle, Solarge Nigeria Ltd.
Officials say the locally produced panels will be deployed across schools, hospitals, security posts, and government buildings under the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative (NPSSI), supporting Nigeria’s clean energy goals and industrial growth.
The REA has already committed to sourcing a significant portion of its public sector solar projects from the factory, ensuring both immediate utility and long term sustainability for the venture.
Leaders behind the project described it as a critical step toward energy self-reliance, local capacity building, and job creation, aligning with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Beyond its environmental and energy impact, the factory is expected to stimulate Nigeria’s manufacturing sector and reduce the high costs associated with imported solar technology.
This isn’t just about clean energy, it’s about local opportunity, industrial growth, and long-term national resilience, said REA’s managing director, Abba Abubakar Aliyu
