Nigeria is setting its sights on a major economic transformation, with plans to grow the industrial sector’s contribution to the economy from the current 10 per cent to 25 per cent by 2035.
Speaking at the Gastech Exhibition and Conference in Milan, Italy, Minister of State for Industry, Sen. John Owan, said the move represents a bold step toward creating more jobs, attracting investment, and improving living standards for millions of Nigerians.
“For the first time in decades, Nigeria has a clear industrial framework. This is about building industries that create opportunities for our young people, strengthen communities, and position Nigeria as a global player,” Owan said.
He explained that the framework is designed to shift the country from relying mostly on raw resources to becoming a hub for innovation and production. With a large population and a vibrant youth base, he said Nigeria has the human capital to power that growth.
The Minister highlighted the government’s emphasis on natural gas as a key driver for powering industries, noting that energy security and affordable supply would help businesses thrive while reducing waste from gas flaring.
“This is about more than numbers it’s about jobs, innovation, and giving Nigerians the chance to compete globally,” Owan added.
Industry leaders at the conference, including NNPC Limited’s Executive Vice President for Gas, Power and New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye, reinforced the vision, stressing that Nigeria’s 210.5 trillion cubic feet of gas could be the backbone of new industries. He pointed to ongoing projects like the LNG Train 7 expansion and the proposed Atlantic Gas Pipeline with Morocco as opportunities that will open doors for both investors and communities.
With reforms improving access to foreign exchange, rising investor interest, and new industrial zones being developed, experts at the conference agreed that Nigeria is entering a decade of opportunity.
“Nigeria is open and ready for business,” Owan told participants. “But more importantly, we are ready to build industries that change lives and futures at home.”
