Nigeria is charting a new course in the global shea industry with President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend the export of raw shea nuts, a move designed to expand productivity, strengthen local processing, and empower rural communities.
Announcing the policy at the 20th Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria Northern Zonal Accountants’ Conference in Minna, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described it as a “bold and strategic step” to unlock the full economic potential of shea.
“Nigeria accounts for more than half of the world’s shea production. This policy ensures we don’t remain just suppliers of raw materials but become global leaders in high-value shea products,” Idris said.
The suspension is expected to spur investment in local processing plants, attract technology transfer, and create thousands of quality jobs for women and youth in shea producing states such as Niger, Kwara, and Kebbi. By prioritizing domestic value addition, Nigeria stands to generate up to $300 million annually in the short term while strengthening its role in global value chains.
“This is not just an economic measure,” Idris added. “It is about giving rural communities a better future, expanding opportunities for women who dominate the shea sector, and ensuring sustainable growth across our economy.”
The policy has received support from the National Shea Products Association of Nigeria, which hailed it as a game changer for local processors long sidelined by raw exports.
The initiative is also part of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to foster inclusivity, accountability, and equitable economic renewal. With improved fiscal discipline, major infrastructure projects, and transparency reforms already underway, the shea policy signals a determined effort to move Nigeria from raw exports to value-driven growth.
For communities across Nigeria’s shea belt, the decision offers more than economic gains it promises dignity, opportunity, and a future where local products carry global value.
