The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has urged Nigerian youths to take the lead in promoting peace, unity, and societal development.
Speaking during a Peace Walk organized by the NSCDC in collaboration with the University of Abuja to mark the International Day of Peace, Odumosu emphasized the role of young people in fostering harmony and reducing crime in communities.
“There is no better way to build a strong society than by empowering our youth to champion peace. When young people are united and engaged positively, criminal activities reduce, and national development becomes attainable,” Odumosu said, according to a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, Monica Ojobi.
Highlighting the theme of the walk, “Advancing Peace through the Sustainable Development Goals,” he noted that peace and youth engagement are essential for societal progress and the achievement of development goals. He also called on political leaders to focus on issues rather than individuals, reminding all stakeholders that respecting diversity and promoting unity strengthens communities.
The University of Abuja, chosen as the venue for the walk due to its youthful and diverse academic community, was praised by Odumosu as an ideal environment to inspire young Nigerians to take active roles in building safer, more empowered societies.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Abuja, Professor Mutiu Olasupo, echoed the commandant’s call, stressing that Nigeria’s growth and development are impossible without peace and youth participation in leadership.
