In a bold move to combat the effects of climate change, the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP) has announced plans to plant 200,000 economic trees across the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Plateau State in 2025.
Mr. Ishaku Jilemsam, Programme Manager of PADP, revealed this initiative on Thursday, May 8, 2025, during a training session on Smart Agriculture organized for women in Bassa LGA. The training was convened by Mr. Nuhu Yakubu, the Special Adviser to Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Sustainable Technology and Carbon Credit Management.
Jilemsam explained that the initiative builds on PADP’s 2024 success, where 100,000 economic trees were planted across the state. The programme, he emphasized, focuses on trees with economic value to encourage sustainability among local farmers.
“We’ve learned that planting trees without economic benefits often leads to them being cut down. However, when trees offer financial value, farmers are more likely to protect and nurture them,” he stated.
To support the project, PADP has requested each LGA chairman to allocate 500 hectares of land. According to Jilemsam, several local governments have already responded positively by providing land for the tree planting programme.
This reforestation effort is part of Plateau State’s broader strategy to promote sustainable agriculture, enhance environmental conservation, and unlock carbon credit opportunities.
