STL Trustees Limited has deepened its partnership with the Care Organisation Public Enlightenment (COPE), marking three years of collaboration dedicated to tackling breast cancer and promoting early detection among Nigerian women. Through the partnership, more than 300 women have benefited from free breast cancer screenings, while thousands more have been reached through awareness campaigns and educational initiatives.
October, recognised globally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is a time to honour those affected by the disease and renew the commitment to equitable access to care. The theme for this year’s commemoration, “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters,” underscores the personal nature of every breast cancer journey and its impact across communities.
Speaking at the recent screening event held in Lagos, Funmi Ekundayo, Managing Director of STL Trustees, described the initiative as one of the company’s most impactful corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes.
“At STL, we partner with several organisations on various CSR projects, but our collaboration with COPE is especially close to our hearts,” she said. “Over the past three years, this initiative has provided free screenings for hundreds of women and raised vital awareness about early detection. Beyond the screenings, thousands more have been educated about regular checks and preventive care.”
Ekundayo also addressed the stigma surrounding breast cancer, urging communities to foster openness and support for those affected. “Many women hesitate to speak out when they notice something unusual due to fear or shame. We must change that mindset and stand with them, not against them,” she emphasised.
She further noted that women often juggle multiple roles as caregivers, professionals, and homemakers which can lead to neglecting their health. “Only when you are healthy can you truly care for your family and pursue your goals,” she added, reaffirming STL’s ongoing commitment to women’s wellness.
Ebunola Anozie, Chief Executive Officer of COPE, praised STL Trustees for its consistent partnership and impact. “If breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated successfully, and in many cases, the breast can be saved,” she explained. “Our collaboration with STL Trustees has helped us reach more women who are now learning about self examination, getting free ultrasounds, and taking proactive steps for their health.”
Anozie highlighted that COPE’s approach extends beyond one time screenings. “We ensure that beneficiaries receive continuous education on monthly self-examinations, regular check-ups, and breast health awareness,” she said.
Beyond its work with COPE, STL Trustees part of the STL Capital Group continues to invest in other CSR initiatives, including education-focused programmes such as school supply donations and the Teens Think reorientation project aimed at youth empowerment. Through these efforts, STL Trustees reaffirms its dedication to building healthier, stronger, and more informed communities.
