SWEEP Foundation has announced the launch of the 2025 Lagos Community Waste Challenge, the second edition of its flagship community led waste management competition, supported by Coca-Cola Nigeria. According to a statement by the Foundation, the initiative will unite Community Development Councils (CDCs) across Lagos State to demonstrate their creativity, innovation, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
Running from November 1 to 22, 2025, the Lagos Waste Challenge encourages communities to develop impactful solutions for packaging waste recovery and recycling promoting environmental awareness and fostering lasting change at the grassroots level.
Building on the success of the inaugural edition, which saw Egbe Idimu LCDA emerge as champions in 2024, this year’s challenge aims to amplify community participation, inspire scalable waste management solutions, and accelerate Lagos’s transition toward a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
To encourage innovation and reward excellence, the 2025 edition offers a total prize pool of ₦2 million, including ₦1 million for the first prize, ₦500,000 for the second prize, ₦250,000 for the third prize, and five consolation prizes of ₦50,000 each.
Speaking on the initiative, Obuesi Phillips, President of SWEEP Foundation, described the Lagos Waste Challenge as more than a competition calling it a growing movement that promotes collective environmental responsibility.
“By harnessing the ingenuity and determination of our communities, we can transform waste management across Lagos State,” he said. “We are eager to see the creative solutions our CDCs will present and confident that this initiative will leave a lasting environmental and social impact.”
Winners of the 2025 Lagos Waste Challenge will be officially announced and celebrated at the Lagos Waste Forum, scheduled for December 2-3, 2025. The event will bring together policymakers, community leaders, environmental advocates, and private sector partners dedicated to advancing sustainability across Nigeria.
