The Special Assistant to the Kaduna State Governor on School Feeding, Dr. Fauziya Buhari Ado, has highlighted how the state’s school feeding programme continues to empower women, support local farmers, and promote inclusive economic growth.
Speaking after receiving the 2025 4th Humanitarian Bootcamp Award in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Buhari Ado called for stronger humanitarian leadership and strategic partnerships to combat hunger and advance food security across Africa.
In her presentation, “Feeding the Future: Leveraging Humanitarian Leadership to Achieve Food Security and Economic Transformation in Africa,” she commended Governor Uba Sani for his vision and leadership in transforming the Kaduna State School Feeding Programme into a model of inclusive development.
“Under Governor Sani’s leadership, the programme has improved child nutrition, boosted school attendance, empowered women, and strengthened local agricultural value chains,” she said. “Each meal served is not just food, it is a bridge to learning, a shield against poverty, and a promise of a better future.”
Dr. Buhari Ado emphasized that food security should be treated as a core pillar of Africa’s social and economic development. She also paid tribute to women leaders championing humanitarian and leadership initiatives across the continent, including Dr. Martina Nentawe Yilwatda and Mrs. Deborah Hornecker, founders of the Women’s Leadership Network, for their mentorship and commitment to women’s empowerment.
The Kaduna State School Feeding Programme, funded with over ₦4 billion annually, provides daily meals to more than 730,000 pupils across 3,400 schools, employing over 7,000 women as cooks and sourcing produce directly from local farmers.
Dr. Buhari-Ado urged governments, civil society, and private partners to collaborate in eradicating hunger, adding, “Feeding our children is not charity, it is nation building.”
Similarly, President Bola Tinubu recently reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling malnutrition and improving school enrolment through the Renewed Hope Mo’Feed Project, aimed at reaching over 600,000 vulnerable Nigerians nationwide.
