APM Terminals Apapa has launched a Female Mechanic Technical Skills Programme to boost women’s participation in technical fields and expand employment opportunities in its host communities.
At the programme’s inauguration held at the Lagos Port Complex, 20 young women aged 18 to 26 received protective gear and began their six-month journey to becoming skilled mechanics. The training will cover forklift and crane maintenance, automobile repairs, electrical works, and related skills, blending practical workshops with classroom sessions.
Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen, praised the women for their determination, noting that stepping into a traditionally male-dominated profession requires courage, resilience, and self-belief. He encouraged them to embrace the programme fully, assuring that internships at APM Terminals would be available for outstanding trainees as part of efforts to build a diverse and inclusive workforce.
Engineer Sandra Aguebor, president of the Lady Mechanic Initiative, commended the company for its support, describing the training as a lifeline that not only equips women with employable skills but also shields them from negative societal pressures.
APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s largest container terminal, has a history of investing in community development and workforce empowerment, from sponsoring female crane operators to now training women in mechanical skills.
For the 20 beneficiaries, the initiative is more than just technical education. It is an opportunity to defy stereotypes, secure livelihoods, and inspire other young women to pursue careers once closed to them.
