A Global Opportunity for Young Innovator
Applications are now open for the 2026 Transformative Research Challenge (TRC), a flagship global competition by the World Food Forum. The initiative is designed to support young researchers working on innovative agrifood solutions that can strengthen food systems and improve livelihoods worldwide.
The challenge specifically targets youth‑led teams ready to move their research from proof of concept to real‑world impact, bridging the gap between early validation and practical application.
Why This Opportunity Matters
Across Africa and other regions, food systems are under growing pressure from climate change, population growth, and resource constraints. While many young researchers are developing promising solutions, the challenge often lies in scaling these ideas beyond the laboratory.
The TRC addresses this gap by providing funding, mentorship, and global exposure to help transform research ideas into scalable, practical solutions that can improve food systems and livelihoods. For CSR stakeholders, this is a critical opportunity to empower youth, foster innovation, and advance sustainable agriculture.
Eligibility Criteria
To ensure impactful participation, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Projects must be led by young people aged 18 to 35 with relevant technical or research expertise.
- Applicants should have an applied, research‑driven project that has already demonstrated a proof of concept through lab testing, controlled experiments, or small‑scale validation.
- Projects must be evidence‑based, with clear data or results, and should fall within Technology Readiness Levels 3 to 5 — beyond idea stage but not yet fully deployed.
- Solutions must be scientifically sound, with a clear methodology and measurable objectives.
Benefits for Participants
Winning teams can receive up to $10,000 in research funding to further develop and validate their solutions, with an additional $10,000 awarded to the overall top team.
Beyond funding, participants will gain:
- Access to scientific mentorship and expert‑led masterclasses.
- Tailored guidance to strengthen research and prepare for real‑world piloting.
- The chance to present their work at the World Food Forum flagship event at FAO headquarters in Rome, gaining global visibility.
- Entry into a global network of researchers, innovators, and agrifood professionals.
- Potential progression to the Youth Food Lab, which supports scaling and field implementation of solutions.
Program Timeline

Why It Matters for Nigeria and Beyond
For countries like Nigeria, where food systems face challenges from climate variability, rising input costs, and post‑harvest losses, initiatives like the TRC are vital. They empower young researchers to design solutions that not only address local agricultural challenges but also contribute to global sustainability goals.
By supporting youth innovation, the TRC aligns with CSR values of community empowerment, sustainability, and responsible innovation. It is a call to action for governments, corporates, and civil society to invest in the next generation of agrifood leaders.
