The Methodist Church of Nigeria has announced plans to establish a new university in Umuimenyi, Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, a move expected to boost education, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth in the region.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to Governor Alex Otti, the Prelate of the Church, Oliver Abah, said the institution would not only strengthen Abia’s knowledge economy but also expand opportunities for young people to acquire skills needed for nation-building.
“Methodist Church Nigeria has always been a pioneer in education, health, and social welfare in this country. By setting up this University, we are creating a platform that will prepare a new generation for meaningful contributions to national development,” Abah said.
He highlighted the importance of government partnership to protect the land from encroachment and ensure the project’s smooth takeoff.
Governor Otti, in response, welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful. He noted that education already receives the largest share of Abia’s budget, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to supporting the University’s establishment.
“Universities don’t just produce graduates; they create industries around them. From housing to commerce, transport to innovation hubs, the ripple effect on the local economy is immense,” Otti said. “We are excited to work with the Methodist Church to make this vision a reality.”
The new university is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic activities in Bende and beyond, attracting investment, fostering innovation, and equipping Abia’s youth with the skills needed to compete in a modern economy.
