MTN Group Fintech has achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming the first ever recipient of the Regional Platform Business Award at MTN’s prestigious Y’ello Care Awards, in recognition of its transformative impact on digital literacy, financial inclusion, and community empowerment across Africa.
Through its MoMo (Mobile Money) teams, MTN Fintech spearheaded a range of high impact initiatives across several African countries including Nigeria, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Benin, Cameroon, South Sudan, and Uganda aimed at bridging the digital divide and uplifting vulnerable populations.
Projects under the Y’ello Care initiative included digital literacy workshops, mobile money training sessions, solar power installations in community centres, and the donation of food, cash, and digital resources to underserved communities. By combining education with access to technology, the initiative empowered thousands with essential digital and financial skills, enabling them to participate more actively in today’s digital economy.
In addition to driving financial inclusion through grants, entrepreneurship training, and Point of Sale device distribution, MTN Fintech also strengthened healthcare delivery across regions by providing smartphones to health workers, powering public facilities with solar panels, and leveraging technology to spread health awareness messages on issues such as HIV/AIDS prevention.
In Ivory Coast, MoMo teams focused on empowering marginalised groups including people with albinism and the deaf community through tailored digital training and leadership programmes that fostered self-reliance and entrepreneurship.
“This year’s Y’ello Care campaign demonstrated practical and effective ways to use technology to tackle complex social issues,” said Nikiwe Tanga, Chief Legal Officer of MTN Group Fintech, who accepted the award alongside CEO Serigne Dioum. “By focusing on digital literacy, financial inclusion, improved healthcare access, and targeted support for vulnerable groups, MoMo is not only enhancing lives but also building stronger, more resilient communities across the continent.”
The award adjudicators, Trialogue, commended MTN Fintech for its “hyperlocal” approach emphasising that community engagement, partnerships, and data driven solutions played a crucial role in the programme’s lasting success.
Celebrating the recognition, Tanga reaffirmed MTN Fintech’s commitment to sustainable development, saying: “We are immensely proud to be the first platform business to win this award. It reflects the passion and dedication of our employees, whose collective efforts embody MTN’s mission to enrich the lives of the communities we serve.”
Through innovation, inclusion, and impact driven initiatives, MTN Fintech continues to redefine how technology can power progress and create opportunities for millions across Africa.
